Conducts studies on snow and ice in order to gather information assisting in the prevention of snow disasters. Principal fields of studies include: 1. research on the physical properties of snow and ice and related phenomena; 2. geophysical aspects of snowcover; 3. engineering problems of snow and ice; 4. life science in snowy areas; 5. earth science of the cryosphere; and 6. data collection on destructive avalanches and others. One of two snow and ice branches of the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED).
