To highlight and promote Australian rural and regional research, teaching, and the academic contribution to policy and debate. NIRRA has been established in response to the need for leadership in rural and regional research in Australia that crosses institutions and disciplinary boundaries. It recognises that many of the major policy issues of the twenty-first century will impact heavily in rural and regional areas and that an interdisciplinary approach will be needed to address these economic, social and environmental challenges.
