The Iranian plateau has long been known as one of the seismically active areas of the world and it frequently suffers destructive and catastrophic earthquakes that cause heavy loss of human life and widespread damage. Since prediction of the time and magnitude of future earthquakes is at present impossible, study of the seismic history of the country is of great importance. The relative simplicity of the pattern of distribution of epicenters, and its relationship to the geological features and the tectonic history of the area, is very important.
